Ryan Return to AYF!

On friday 19th January, Ryan made his first visit to YF since his accident last July.
It was a great moment, as his mum led him into YF to rousing cheers and party poppers!
It was just so good to see him at YF again. He had looked forward so much to coming and the
reception he got was wonderful. He and his mum stayed most of the evening before
he returned to his home for the rest of the weekend.

Please continue to pray for him and his family

We also introduced to YF, two new AYF leaders - Becki Howell & Jon Callear (picture attached)

Matt Wallace took a crew to see Ryan on Tuesday 9th January 2007.
He seemed in really good spirits: had a new chair on trial which is
power assisted so he can wheel/steer himself - seems to have made a real difference to his sense of independence -
short video clip attached...  movie clip

Ryan talked about rugby which he seems really interested in; a main (& probably most marketable?)
fundraising need is for the wheelchairs: the power assisted one isn't standard issue & costs £5,000;
a new one with bumpers etc(!) for rugby is another £4,000...

RYAN WILL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR!

Message from Ryan's mum - Update on Ryan - Friday 1st December 2006
He came home for a few hours on Monday 27th November, when all the support services came.
We have arranged for him to come home for Stuart’s 21st birthday (18th Dec) coming home for three days 17/18/19th Dec, then he goes back to hospital until 24th Dec, when he comes home for Christmas.  Unfortunately he won’t be able to be home for the YF Christmas Party.
Christmas dates 24th till 27th Dec
Then back to hospital
Then New Year 31sy Dec till 2nd Jan
Then back to hospital, to continue re-hab.
No discharge date yet, but he may have to go into a transition home until we get the work done at home which we estimate around May time.
We may have to consider renting a disabled bungalow somewhere local, to try to get him home earlier.
I sure he would love to see some of his friends if anyone wants to visit could I ask they contact me at home first on 01543 379544
Many Thanks
Karen

Rob went today (Tuesday 21st November) with Hayleigh, Hannah & Meg. Ryan has been moved to Gladstone ward where the visiting is now 4pm - 8pm but seems fairly flexible. Ryan has had a different wheel chair, this latest one is much more compact and helps teach Ryan to support himself more in his upper body.
Ryan was the best we have seen him so far. He was bright, positive and was so pleased to see us.

We talked about what Dr Flenley had said to us at YF last friday, and Ryan told us that he had broken C5 vertebrae in his neck but had NOT severed his spinal column which is great news as Dr Flenley described that a severed spinal column cannot heal itself. Ryan feels that he still has the chance that he will recover more movement in his lower body, so it's so important that we continue to pray.
He definitely has more use of his hands, and was able to put a glove on which helps him to do simple things with special tools provided. He has also been able to get onto this website via the hospital's facilities, and has seen all that we have written and the pictures published so far. He had even managed to send his mum a text from his mobile phone - fantastic!
He is so grateful for our love and concern. Hayleigh & Hannah had made a very special card for Ryan, and below are some pictures of it and of Ryan taken today. click on them for a larger picture.

Matt W went with a team today to see Ryan (14th November 2006) Ryan was in good spirits, although still a little uncomfortable after the operation. His movements are still as good post operation, so that's positive news. He looks good in the following three pictures - as does a random nurse! click for larger image

9th November 2006 - email sent out to the YF Prayer Chain from YF Leaders
There is no easy way of telling you all this, but we as your YF leadership team believe you should all Know.

Ryan had the operation he needed yesterday and was in considerable discomfort and pain last night and again today. The surgeon said he was satisfied with the procedure he did to strengthen Ryan's neck for the future.

The concerning news is that Ryan has now been diagnosed as tetraplegic, and will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, with the need of 24/7 care.
This diagnosis was ascertained before the surgery, as he has no movement of his hands or from the chest down after all his time after the accident.

Ryan is fairly positive about this and is talking about driving and having a specially adapted car. A motorised wheelchair has been ordered. This will obviously have major implications for the family and the facilities Ryan will need at home.

Thank you for all the love that so many of you have shown to Ryan with all the letter writing, visits and above all else the prayer. You have been a wonderful testimony to us all in the wider church family of showing such an expression of love and support to Ryan.

It does appear that without divine intervention, by way of a miracle, the diagnosis he has been given is the future for Ryan.

Personally speaking, (Rob) I believe we need to be persistent in our praying and go on asking God to work through this and to trust that God will restore Ryan again. God is the great healer. What I struggle with sometimes is why not now Lord? My faith in Christ tells me to trust and 'Thy will be done'

God chooses not to heal sometimes. It’s not that he loves Ryan any less or that Ryan or us have done anything wrong, it’s just that sometimes even though we plead with God, healing doesn’t always happen. We live in a fallen world and there is so much which isn’t as it should be. This is why we have wars and terrible things happen. But one thing I do know is that God can move powerfully in Ryan’s life and use him in a mighty way. And we need to pray that for him.

Above all else we need to pray afresh into this situation and ask God for help for Ryan and the family, and to pray too that Ryan will stay focused on God for the strength and endurance he's needing.

We need to continue with the outpouring of our love and attention to Ryan with visits and writings and in any other ways we may come up with. We need to go on supporting this guy, and his family, and see him through this. God needs to be glorified in this situation and you are doing your part to see that He is.

Do get back to us with any questions or concerns.

Dr Colin Flenley has offered to come and speak to us about why sometimes healings don't come. We think this might be a good idea to listen to what he has to say and to talk things through if needed.

Much love to you all.        Your YF Leadership team. 9th November 2006

Wednesday 11th October  -YF Visit

Wednesday October 11th 2006

Ryan didn't want to open his GCSE results and they've been pinned up in the envelope they came in, on the notice board above his bed in hospital since the accident...... until today!

Ryan got 2a's 3b's 3c's & 1d :-)x

His mum said it was well worth the wait!

Nice one Ryan. Keep the good news coming

Monday October 9th 2006     'Ryan enjoying the sunshine!'

Wednesday 4th October 2006
This is the picture we've been waiting for. Ryan is on the move!!
Praise and thank God for this picture.
This was Ryan's first outing since he went into Oswestry and it's just so wonderful!
His mum was so overjoyed and so too was Ryan! She said  he did so well and this is just the start.
She and his dad have been magnificent in supporting and caring for Ryan like they have/are.

Thank you to all of you who have been faithful in praying....but please....
 don't stop!

Tuesday 3rd October.

We went to see Ryan today and he was sitting as far upright as he has so far.
This isn't as easy. Because he's been lying flat for so long, it affects his blood pressure when he sits up.

He does hope to be in a wheel chair tomorrow, so please do pray for him. He still has a long process of getting well again, and needs our continuing support and prayers.

He does appreciate all the letter writing and visits.

Saturday 30th September 2006

Katie Appleby went on Saturday 30th September with Joe, Ian, Emma and Lottie

Ryan has been sitting up a bit and a wheel chair is now at his bed side. Thanks God for this progress and please continue to pray.

News just in! Wednesday 27th September
Good news for Ryan. Results of x-rays show that the ligaments in his neck have healed sufficiently for him to be able to sit up. The hospital are slowly inclining his bed and he is in fine spirits. Praise God for this great news! Please keep praying.
